Bird watching, Karnataka



Birdwatching is a delight to the lovers of the nature, especially if you are in a place like Karnataka where the nature has showered all her warmth and beauty. It is a region full of lush green forests that form the abode of hundreds of species of birds.

The birdwatching will reveal different avian species as you move to the different regions of the state. According to the composition of birds, the state of Karnataka can be grouped into the following regions:

  • Coastal Karnataka: Here you have the good opportunities of birdwatching especially of sea birds like terns and gulls and many other water birds particularly in winter.

  • Western Ghats: It is a paradise for the birdwatching in Karnataka. Interestingly, here you can also watch some of the largest and most beautiful butterflies of the Indian sub-continent. Birdwatching here is usually done around streams and waterholes. Typical evergreen species like fairy blue bird and Malabar trogan can be seen here.

  • Deccan Plateau or Eastern Plains: Here the important birdwatching areas include the grasslands of Ranibennur, grasslands of Mydenahalli, dry deciduous forests of Sandur, Devarayana Durga hills, Savanadurga state forest and so on.
