Kolkata sportsman to officiate in Olympics tennis

Abhishek Mukherjee, a white badge holder in tennis, has won a special honor for India. He is set to officiate in the Beijing Olympics. He has been also appointed the line judge and chair umpire for the US Open, which is scheduled to be held from 19 August. He had earlier officiated in the Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
Joint effort to combat pollution

The combat pollution in the city, Kolkata Police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation are planning to set up a civic police volunteer force. The force will be formed from among local club members who are engaged in sports activities. The force is expected to act as a watchdog to check mushrooming of illegal hoardings, encroachment of public space by hawkers, unauthorized parking, etc.
Kolkata To Get A New Port

Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) will reportedly finalize the necessary terms and conditions for the Rs 1.2 bn port it is planning to set up in Diamond Harbour at its board meeting this month. The Request for Qualification KoPT will float will be finalized through the board's approval, before developing the port on a Public Private Partnership mode, according to the KoPT chairman AK Chanda.
More Garment Parks In Kolkata Soon

West Bengal micro, small scale enterprise and textile minister Mr Manabendra Mukherjee has reportedly urged more private firms to invest in the state's garment textile industry in a bid to upgrade readymade garment units. The minister has reportedly disclosed plans for constructing 20 integrated garment parks in West Bengal soon. West Bengal State Infrastructure Development Corporation has already built six garment parks in the state.
DLF proposes green housing project off Kolkata

According to WBREDA, they have received proposal form Real estate developers DLF and the Kolkata-based Siddha Group West Benngal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) to set up environment-friendly green residential clusters at Rajarhat near Kolkata.
These two projects, with 400-500 units, involve an investment of around Rs 10 billion each.

The units would have solar panels on the terrace to generate power for residential use; excess power, if any, would be sold to the state grid.
"They proposed to build 400-500 houses spread across 70 acres. Apart from solar power, the projects would also have rainwater harvesting capabilities as well as equipment to convert waste into energy," Gon Chaudhuri said.
These units would be built with green materials, which are made by consuming lesser amounts of energy in comparison to traditional building materials.
Ruia Group acquires British auto component firm

The Kolkata-based Ruia Group, has acquired British auto component manufacturer Schlegel Automotive Europe.
According to Ruia this acquisition is important as already they have state in Dunlop India and the growing demand in the automotive sector, plans are already underway to set up manufacturing unit Schlegel manufacturing unit in India. This will involve investment of $15 million for expansion in India.
Schlegel will part-fund this investment, and the Indian arm, called Schlegel Automotive India Pvt. Ltd, will be a 100 percent subsidiary of Schlegel Europe.
Reliance to set up art studio in Kolkata

The Chief minister of West Bengal, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee announced in the Assembly on 3rd July 2008 that Reliance will set up a state of the art studio in the Kolkata city.
According to the Chief Minister, The Tollygunge Studio will be upgraded by the state government and sophisticated gadgets for the Roopkala Kendra in Salt Lake will be donated by the Italian government. The Chief Minister also clarified that the state government will not set up any film city in Siliguri. There are proposals to set up a studio by film actor Soumitra Chatterjee and renovation of Movieton studio by Biplab Chatterjee but no concrete proposals have yet been submitted by them.
Automobile engineering institute to come up in Kolkata

George Telegraph Training Institute in association with Mukesh Himatsingka Group announced the launch of a private automobile engineering institute in kolkata city. This institute, named George Telegraph Institute of Automobile Engineering (GTIAE), is expected to generate trained manpower for the automobile sector. The students enrolling in the institute for the session starting this October will be offered a 24-month course called the Advanced Automobile Technology. Admissions for this session have already started from June 30. The minimum educational qualification required for a candidate to get admitted to this course is clearing the Class X Board examinations with satisfactory marks.
