Rabindra Bharti Museum

Rabindra Bharti Museum of Kolkata is popularly known as 'Jorashanko Thakurbari' which is the home of Rabindranath Tagore. It is near Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue. It was constructed in the 18th century by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore (grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore). The premise houses several buildings. The Rabindra Bharti Museum of Kolkata , an integral part of the University is a significant reserve of the works of the Tagore, particularly of Abanindranath and Rabindranath.

 

In 1961, while the State was having the centenary celebration of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the then Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray lawfully took away the house. Ultimately the Rabindra Bharti Museum was set up in this house popularly on 8th May by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India.

 

In its beginning the Rabindra Bharti Museum of Kolkata occupied a large area and 40 original paintings of Rabindranath and photographs donated by the National Library. The Museum is an integral part of the Rabindra Bharati University, founded in 1962, for the promotion of the highest level of education in various fields of Humanities and Performing Arts.

 

Every year Rabindra Bharti Museum of Kolkata celebrates:

•  25th Baishakh, birthday of Rabindranath Tagore

•  22 nd Sravana, the date of poets demise

•  The birth anniversaries of world famous poets

 

Rabindra Bharti Museum at Kolkata has a profound collection of books, original paintings, mauscripts, photographs, etc. which belonged to the leading personalities of the 19th century such as Iswar Chanda Vidyasagar and Dwarkanath Tagore.

 

At Rabindra Bharti Museum of Kolkata one can enjoy the light and sound show, which usually depicts the story of arrival of the Tagores to this house, their remarkable role in Bengal Renaissance and moreover the eventful life of the Poet.
