A tour of the hill stations of Himachal Pradesh remains incomplete without a visit to the picturesque Valley and mountains of Solan. Known as the 'mushroom city of India', Solan is also the hub of mushroom production in India. However, Solans main claim to fame is her No. 1 whisky and Golden Eagle beer which is produced at the Mohan Meakin's brewery, the oldest in India. On the Shimla- Kalka Highway lies the Karol Mountains which is the seat of Salon.

There are a lot of things that one can enjoy in Solan. One can attend 'Shulini', a yearly show, or 'Thoda', an artistic warfare which are the major tourist attractions in the region. Besides these performances, the natural beauty of Solan captivates its visitors at once. The lush meadows with the mist covered mountains in the backdrop create a picture like the one on a post card. There are a number of places in and around Solan which are a perfect example of the beauty of the Indian Himlayas, These places are:
  • Barog
  • Kiarighat
  • Kasauli
  • Darla Ghat
  • Chail
  • Parwanoo
Solan is conveniently located and is only 70 kilometers from Chandigarh and 300 kilometers from Delhi. There are a number of bus services to Solan or one can even hire a taxi from Delhi or Chandigarh. Kalka is the nearest railway station and one can capture some of the best pictures of nature on the way. Those traveling by air will have to land at the Shimla Airport from where they can hire a taxi or board a bus.
