Chandel

Chandel district that encompasses an area of 3, 313 sq. km in south eastern Manipur came into being on 13th May 1974. Formerly known as Tengnoupal district, Chandel is enclosed between Myanmar and the districts of Churachandpur, Ukhrul and Thoubal.

Sited at a distance of 64 km from the capital city of Imphal, Chandel is well connected with the rest of the country through the National Highway No. 39 that passes through the state. The international trade center of Manipur is located in Moreh, a town in the southern extremity of Chandel district. The Trans-Asian Super Highway is also another imminent project that is certain to revolutionize the district's infrastructure and elevate it to the status of an elite gateway to Asia.

According to the 1991 Census Report, Chandel records a population of 71,104, who reside in the 419 villages that are spread across the district. The Census also cites the district's literacy rate at 46.68%.

The scanty populace of Chandel district is dominated mainly by the following tribes:

  • Paite
  • Kukis
  • Moyon
  • Thadou
  • Monsang
In fact, the multi ethnicity of the populace of Chandel comprises of Muslims, Bengalis, Biharis and Punjabis who all live together in harmony.

The Chandel district authorities and other government officials are trying their level best to spruce up the district's infrastructure. The district is famed for a multitude of reasons that range from its panoramic vistas that captivate tourists to the innumerable number of soldiers who sacrificed their lives at the altar of the Kargil War and whose names are immortalized as martyrs in every Manipur household.
