Imphal East

Imphal East is one of the districts of Manipur came into official existence on 18th June 1997. The district encompasses an area of 469.44 sq. km and is bifurcated into the Central Valley and Jiribam Valley. Imphal District, with its district headquarters sited at Porompat, is perched at an altitude of 790 m above mean sea level.

According to the statistics cited in the 1991 Census Report, the population of Imphal District is recorded to be 3,30,460, a small portion of which is made up of Scheduled Caste and Tribes. The literacy rate is also commendable at 68.05%. The predominantly agrarian economy is supplemented by practicing horticulture, animal husbandry, poultry as well as collection of forest products.

Tourism is another eminent revenue generating sector of Imphal East district. A couple of tourist lodges are located at Kaina and Jiribam and offer a breathtaking view of the nearby locales. The scenic splendor of the Poirou Pat hills, the revered sanctum of the Govindajee Temple and the Hanuman Temple as well as the two war cemeteries are certain to enrapture tourists.

The district has a fairly well developed road network that provides connectivity with the different parts of the country as well as the neighboring states. The National Highways numbered 39, 59 and 150 link Imphal East District with its neighbors. To facilitate administration, the district is divided into the following subdivisions:
  • Porompat Sub-Division
  • Keirao Bitra Sub-Division
  • Jiribam Sub-Division
  • Sawombung Sub-Division
