Tamenglong District

Tamenglong is one of the eight districts of Manipur, an elite member of the seven sisters that form northeast India. Sited in the western extremity of the state, Tamenglong district was formed to meet the administrative exigencies in the state of Manipur.

Tamenglong district's topography is made up mostly of rugged hills, lofty mountains and rolling valleys with occasional human habitation in the bucolic hamlets. However, the fragile land formation and the abundance of rocks are responsible for the frequent occurrence of landslides, earthquakes and avalanches that shake the entire district during the driving monsoon downpours. The district is drained by the Iyei, Makru, Barak and Irang rivers.

Tamenglong district encompasses an area of 4, 391 sq. km and stretches across the latitudinal parallel of 24°59' North and the longitudinal meridian of 93°30' east. The 2001census states that the district has a population of 86, 278 with a 56.01 % literacy rate. The district is primarily inhabited by the Khasi, Zeliangrong Nagas, Kuki, Hmar and Chiru tribes who follow an agrarian economy.

The district headquarters are sited at Tamenglong and is further divided into the following sub-divisions for administrative convenience:
  • Tamenglong
  • Nungba
  • Tousem
  • Tamei
The district has a well developed network of arterial roads that link the different parts of the district with the state. The National Highway No. 53 passes through the state coupled with several state highways, namely the:
