Industry in Manipur

Industry in Manipur plays a pivotal role in the economic development of this state in the northeastern region of India.

Instead of the large scale industries, Manipur has made excellent progress in setting up small scale industries in all its major towns and industrial suburbs. Almost 7700 small scale industries are present. Several industrial plants have been commissioned as well. Among them drugs, pharmaceuticals, electronic goods, plastic goods and steel manufacturing plants are on the charts. A cement plant has recently come up which is providing a reasonable output.

Several consumer plants are also coming up. Among them fast moving consumer goods take the limelight. There is a ghee (clarified butter) manufacturing unit that has been commissioned. Likewise other consumer goods plants are also being set up in this region due to a large availability of raw materials and manpower. There are several forests in and around Manipur which serve as large sources of raw material for these industries and strengthen the backbone of the Manipur economy.

These industries require both skilled and unskilled manpower to run the plants. That is why several training (vocational) schools have been set up in this region to instruct the workforce for these industries. There is a center for electronic design and technology which has been set up at Imphal. There is also a Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and technology at the state capital. An electronics factory has already started production. It manufactures black and white television sets for a reputed conglomerate.
