Manipur Fauna

With around 67% of the total geographical area comprising of hills and forests, the Indian state of Manipur has a rich variety of plants and animals. Manipur fauna and flora are also found in abun-dance. In Manipur, the climatic conditions vary from tropical to sub alpine, depending on the height of the hills. Due to these weather circumstances, damp forests and pine forests, a large vari-ety of plants and animals are found in abundance in this northeastern state of India.

The fauna in Manipur consists of various varieties of animal species like:

  • Clouded Leopard
  • Spotted Linshang
  • Hoolock Gibbon
  • Sloe Loris
  • Blyths Tragopan
  • Burmese Pea-Fowl
  • Horn bills

    There are four types of Hornbills that are found in Manipur. The most unique part of the fauna in Manipur is the Sangai, which is also known as the dancing deer. The Sangai is the state animal of the state of Manipur while Nongyeen is the state bird.

    The vegetation on the famous Loktak Lake in Manipur maintains the herds of Sangai. This species of deer is facing the threat of extinction from the World. Among the other animals, the most unique fauna is the Salamander, which is also known as 'Lengwa'. It is found at the foothills of the Siroi in Ukhrul.
