Imphal Municipal Council

The governance of the East and the West Districts of Imphal in Manipur falls under the jurisdiction of the Imphal Municipal Council. According to the census conducted in the year 2001, the population of the city of Imphal stands at 217275. The population of the city is divided into the 27 wards that function under the jurisdiction of the Imphal Municipal Council at Manipur. The members of Imphal Municipal Council of Manipur are democratically elected by the people who reside in the city and are their representatives.

A total area of 30.75 square kilometers falls under the jurisdiction of the Imphal Municipal Council. The council has realized the need to grow the infrastructure of the city substantially to support the growth of the population in Imphal. The council adopted the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to promote growth and development in the urban regions of the Imphal District. The planned program aims to provide adequate infrastructure in the Class I city of Imphal and also to maintain the heritage of this north eastern city.

For the progress of the city, the Imphal Municipal Council adopted the city development plan with the mission of promoting the growth of the cities of the two districts. The project aids in the promotion of tourism, trade and commerce and agriculture. Development of sanitation, public transport system, waste management, water supply and the sewerage system of the city of Imphal fall under the planned jurisdiction of the Imphal Municipal Council.

The effective work of the democratic body of Imphal Municipal Council has facilitated the growth of the city.
