Major Fire at Bhubaneswar’s SUM Hospital Kills and Injures Many

At least 19 people died and over 100 were injured in a fire which broke at the SUM Hospital on Monday evening in Bhubaneswar. According to sources, the fire started at 7.30 pm in the dialysis ward which is located on the second floor of the hospital. Later, the fire spread to the medicine ward and Intensive Care Unit. Initially 14 people were declared dead at AMRI Hospital, while five succumbed to injuries. According to the Health Secretary Arti Ahuja, 106 patients are undergoing treatment for their injuries.


A high-level probe into the incident has been ordered by the state government. As per the reports from the hospital officials, over 500 people were present at the hospital at the time of the incident. However, all patients were evacuated and the injured were admitted to other hospitals.

“Spoke to Minister @JPNadda & asked him to facilitate transfer of all those injured to AIIMS. Hope the injured recover quickly,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. Responding to the tweet,Health Minister JP Nadda tweeted, “I have spoken to Director, AIIMS Bhubaneswar to provide all necessary support and help the patients in the best way possible. @narendramodi,”

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited the hospitals where the injured are admitted and declared free treatment for them. He has tweeted that he had conveyed all updates about the treatment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with monitoring of the situation.
