Two outbreaks of extremely contagious bird flu virus have been reported in Kerala. According to media reports, bird flu virus was first detected in broiler chicken in a farm in Kumarakom near Kottayam district. A red alert is reported to be issued in three districts of the state – Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam; they have also been restricted from moving the poultry products. Reportedly, the avian influenza (also known as bird flu) has been the cause of the death of 17,000 ducks in these districts of the state. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the authorities have been prompted to cull more than 2,00,000 birds. As per media reports, the government of Tamil Nadu is likely to ban import of ducks and their eggs from Kerala.
