Cyclone Roanu causes devastation in Bangladesh; 150,000 people left homeless
Tropical cyclone Roanu has caused devastation in Bangladesh. More than 150,000 people have been left homeless in the coastal districts of Bangladesh. Reaz Ahmed, Chief of Disaster Management Department, said that the homeless people are currently living in state-run shelter. He said that many are also residing in the open. Meanwhile, Roanu has claimed 24 lives in 15 districts.
Current Position of Cyclone Roanu
Cyclone Roanu, which is expected to reach Bangaldesh coast by Saturday evening, is slowly moving east-northwards at a speed of 25kmph. It is currently located around 160 km east of Paradip in Odisha and 440 km southwest of Chittagong in Bangladesh. The cyclone is likely to bring heavy rain and thundershowers in Odisha’s coastal areas and Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata.
Cyclone Roanu likely to cause floods, landslides in northeastern India, Bangladesh
Cyclone Roanu is likely to bring a major flood risk to northeastern India and Bangladesh during the first half of the weekend. According to reports, the tropical cyclone will hit Bangladesh, close to north of Chittagong, on Saturday. It had made landfall in northern Odisha and West Bengal on Friday night.
As the cyclonic storm moves from the Indian coast to Bangladesh, it is expected to turn into a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained winds of 90-115 km/h (55-70 mph). The south-central coast of Bangladesh is among the areas to be affected due to Cyclone Roanu.
Cyclone Roanu: more than 130,000 families displaced in Sri Lanka
Cyclone Roanu has wrecked havoc across Sri Lanka. Around 58 people have died in a series of mudslides in the country, while hundreds are reported missing. The cyclone has caused massive devastation with more than 130,000 families displaced. As per media reports, intense rainfall will continue in India, which would elevate flood threat over the next few days.
Cyclone Roanu moving off the North Andhra and Odisha coast as a speed of 25 kmph
Cyclone Roanu is currently centered around 40 km south-southeast of Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and some 365 km south-southwest Paradip in Odisha. As per reports, the cyclone is moving off the North Andhra and Odisha coast as a speed of 25 kmph. According to Skymet Weather, there is a chance that the Cyclone Roanu will strengthen into a severe cyclone; however, cloud configurations and present weather conditions indicate that it may not gather the amount of strength as expected.
Cyclone ROANU: Alert sounded in the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as a deep depression has resulted in the rise of cyclone Roanu. As per media reports, both states were hit by heavy rains. In Odisha, 12 districts are on an alert and it is expected that winds will hit a speed of 100 km per hour. Chief Ministers of both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have asked the authorities to take all necessary precautions. Around 10 units of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force have been prepared to deal with the situation.
