40 killed, 100 injured in UP train collision

Around 40 people are feared dead and at least 100 have been injured, in a train mishap in Uttar Pradesh, early morning on 26 May 2014. According to media reports, the Gorakhdham Express collided with a goods train, which was stationary, near Khalilabad in UP.

The mishap took place near Churaid Railway Station at the Sant Kabirnagar district, which is around 230 km from Lucknow, when the express train arrived on the same track as the goods train. According to reports, six bogies were derailed.

Arunendra Kumar, Chairman of the Railway Board commented, “Relief work has begun, there are casualties but the exact figure is not known yet.”

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister designate of India also tweeted expressing concern over the situation. He wrote, that he spoke to the Cabinet Secretary to take an overview of the situation and ensure timely assistance to the injured.

Rajnath Singh, a senior BJP leader also conveyed his condolences to those who have been killed.
