As the rescue operations continue to take out the people trapped under the debris, the locals and the eyewitnesses claim that at least 100 people could be trapped. According to the local residents, they heard a loud explosion after the bridge came crashing down.

This Vivekananda Road flyover is a project that was being developed by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It is a Rs 164-crore project that the Left front government had initiated in 2007. The idea was to decongest the road by facilitating smooth movement of traffic. From inception, the locals had objected to the project as some stretches of the flyover crossed precariously close to multi-storied buildings.
