Juxtaposed between the Sela, Bomdila and Chaku ranges, West Kameng District is adorned by the Tenga, Bichom and Dirang Chu rivers. This district moored high up in the mountains experiences the cool tundra climate accompanied by snowfall in winter.
The district is divided into Bomdila, Thirizino and Rupa subdivisions with the district headquarter being located at Bomdila. The Additional Deputy Commissioner is the head of the district administration. The district is well connected by rail, road and air. All circles are centrally connected by road to Bomdila. The nearest railway station is at Bhalukpong, 100 km away from Bomdila while the Tezpur Airport is 160 km away from the same.
The Census Report, 2001 has recorded a population of 74,595 in a total of 421 villages. The district has marked an exemplary literacy rate of 61.67 %. The principal inhabitants are the Monpa (Dirang, Boot, Lish, and Kalaktang monpa), Miji (Sajalong), Sherdukpen, Aka, and Bugun (Khawa) tribes. The locals are mainly Buddhists while some even practise aboriginal religious practices. The tribals have their own society and village council.
The economy is primarily agrarian while many are also involved in animal husbandry, industry, fisheries, textile and handicraft industries.
West Kameng District attracts tourists from all over the world. Besides being mesmerized by the district's resplendent beauty, tourists can also go sightseeing to the ruins of BhalukPong, the exquisite Dirang fort and the Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling Monastery.
