Nalbari district is situated in between 26°-27°N latitude and 91°-97°E longitude and is bounded by the Darrang and Kamrup districts in the east, Barpeta district in the west, Bhutan in the north and Brahmaputra in the south. According to 2001 census, the population of Nalbari is 1138184.

For decades Nalbari has been famous for Sanskrit Education. At present literacy percentage of Nalbari is 55.99%.

The tributaries of the Brahmaputra, Nona, Buradia, Pagaldia, Borolia and Tihu contribute enormously towards the agrarian economy of the district. Fisheries, animal husbandry, sericulture and handloom also determine the district's economic scenario.

Nalbari, 60km. from Guwahati, is well-connected to the rest of India by NH 31 and broad gauge Line. Nearest railway junction is Rangia. Borjhar, Guwahati serves as the nearest Airport.

Sonkuriha is famous for its scenic beauty and various species of migratory birds flock here in large numbers during winter.

Ganga Pukhuri in Sonkuriha is also famed for the Ashok Astami mela when devotees from various corners of the country pay homage to departed souls.

Religion takes a backseat when it comes to celebrating Raas festival in November.
