The pottery in Goa, like the state itself, has a charm of its own. While pottery in Goa is a traditional art, and the form is made with earthen clay, terracotta is ceramic clay. The products of pottery in Goa are both of useful and decorative types, such as flower garden pots, pen holders, ashtrays, bowls, statues of saints and goddesses. They draw inspiration from religious, natural or historical themes. Borde and Bicholim are two famous centres of earthenware, though pottery is made all over Goa.
After you have absorbed the landscape of Goa, it will prove quite a challenge to resist picking up souvenirs. However, you have little to worry about, as on that count you will be spoilt for choice, with the pottery in Goa offering you a wide range to select from. Goa earthenware has a deep rich red, velvety texture, and a charm and style of its own. Apart from a large variety of domestic ware which includes attractive water and flower pots, a wide range of figures and panels are also made. These are more in the nature of sculpture like an old man or woman, mother with a child or two children playing, and a variety of such themes. The panels also draw themes from religion or history.
