Those days are gone when dentistry as a stream of study or career was looked down upon. With the advancement in technology and equipments, perception towards dentistry has changed tremendously, in a positive way. With The Dentist Act 1948, Dental education and dentistry as a profession, was regulated throughout India. It is financed by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Department of Health), Government of India.

India has a good number of dental colleges and institutes which are known for world class facilities like modern technology and equipments, talented teachers, top class infrastructure etc. Every year the dental colleges in India produce high class dentists.

The minimum eligibility criteria for pursuing dental education is one should be not less than 17years of age and should have passed 10+2. Students also need to qualify the paramedical test (PMT) at state or national level. One can go for various dental courses like BDS, MDS, etc.

There are more than 200 dental institutes all over India and almost 12,000 people with BDS degree. Dental education opens up a number of career options like Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Orthodontics, Operative Dentistry and Endodontics, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery etc.
