Lakhimpur

The administrative district of Lakhimpur lies between 26.48’- 27.53’ N latitude and 93.42’- 9420’ E longitude in the north-east corner of Assam and is wedged between Dhemaji District and Subansiri river on the east, Jorhat District on the southern side, Sonitpur District on the West and the state of Arunachal Pradesh on the north.

The District covers an area of 2977 sq.km. and as per 2001 census the total population is 889,325, the sex ratio being 952 females/ 1000 males.

The name Lakhimpur means ‘full of blessing from the goddess of prosperity’. True to its name Lakhimpur is endowed with very fertile soil and its economy depend largely on agriculture. Paddy grows in abundance and tropical rain forest lends its rich green color to the whole of the district. The mighty Brahmaputra, the Subansiri once famous for gold washing, the Ranganadi, and Dikrong rejuvenates Lakhimpur with fertile silt every year.

As every coin has two sides, excessive rainfall, melting of snow and landslides in surrounding areas flood the low-lying river basins of Lakhimpur each year and cause problem among its inhabitants. Deforestation, lack of medium or large scale industry and poor infrastructure act as hindrances to the district’s otherwise economical development.

Lakhimpur colors itself bright as it celebrates Bihu every spring and is sure to give you memories to savor all life. The two sub-divisions i.e. North Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana are served by ASTC buses and the North East Frontier Railway. Ranga Reserve, Kakoi Reserve, Dulung Reserve and Pava Reserve are habitat for a number of birds and are treasure trove for those with an eye for wildlife and a variety of trees.
