Leh District



Leh District, the Roof of the World was carved from the Grater Ladakh valley. With an area of 45,110 sq. km Leh District records the maximum area in Jammu & Kashmir. Extending between 32 to 36 degree North latitude and 75 to 80 degree East longitude. Leh is surrounded by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the West and China in the north and eastern part and Lahul Spiti of Himachal Pradesh in the South East.

Leh District, whose inhabitants mainly depend upon agriculture and livestock rearing for their subsistence has marked a scanty and scattered population of 1,17,638.

Leh District offers a picturesque view of a bright blue skyline dominated by snow clad glaciers with a mellow sunshine. This district houses the highest airport in the world. Besides the malls selling trinkets, the Buddhist Gompas and monasteries attract tourists from all over the world. The legendary Hemis Gompa with its abundant wealth, the Thikse Gompa, the exotic Leh Palace, the Hall of Fame, the country’s highest motorable road at Khardongla and the turquoise blue sparkling Pangong Lake in the Indo-China border are captivating sights to behold.
