Tourism in Kerala

Kerala has carved out a niche for itself, thanks to wondrous locales, halcyon beaches, misty pinnacles, exotic flora and fauna, adventure sports, marvelous architecture, remnants of an era gone by. Hundreds and thousands of backpackers make a beeline for its lush retreats round the year. The burgeoning industry is one of the major revenue earners for Kerala. Brilliant marketing and attractive packaging has been the success mantra for the tourism industry of Kerala, catapulting the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation to dizzy heights of fame.

Tourism in Kerala has grown in leaps and bounds due to concerted efforts of the Department of Tourism established by the Government of Kerala, dating back to the 1930’s. This industry is also a huge employment generator. Over seven lakh people earn their livelihood from this sector and the revenue that it generates soars to a whopping four thousand crores that amounts to 6.29% of the Gross Domestic Product. If the current trends are anything to go by, this booming sector will employ about ten thousand people in the years to come.

Besides generating employment and revenue, Kerala tourism is history revisited, as it is a repository of the heritage of India. Ayurveda, ancient shrines, ineluctable traditional handicrafts, age-old performing arts- these are fascinating facets of this beautiful country. The Department of Tourism has made pioneering efforts to popularize plethora of tourist delights through effective implementation of several policies.

The trends and prospects of this bustling sector points towards a bright, uphill ascent. The present infrastructure needs further upliftment. Laws like KLU Order, Rent Control Act, Labour Acts, Building Tax Act, Excise Law have to be revamped. The Government has to strive towards an overhaul of the basic amenities like electric supply, sewerage and so on. It can also seek pecuniary assistance from non resident Indians. The Government has to come up with novel tourist destinations and also fuel several tourism programs conducted by various institutes.

The public relations officers will have to play a major role in furthering the prospects of tourism in Kerala, for attractive packaging with a powerful punchline is the mantra for success in the hey days of corporatisation.

The future of the economy of Kerala is bound to be a glorious one. More About Kerala.....
