Mysore Invades Kerala

In 1773, Haider Ali once again expanded his territory by invading Trichur. Thus Hyder Ali exercised his ascendancy both over Malabar as well as Trichur.

Haider Ali’s son, Tipu Sultan known as the tiger of Mysore inherited the throne in 1782 and following the footsteps of his famed father, Tipu Sultan was able to take possession of the whole of South Malabar in 1783. This saw the rise of Muslim rule in South India.

But in 1790 when Tipu just coped to transgress Travancore, the Third Mysore War broke out and this marked the doom of Tipu Sultan as he had to bit by bit surrender his territories to the British authority. Mysore, headed by Tipu Sultan once again tried to intrude and encroach upon Kerala but the powerful British forces defeated him and the final catastrophe struck when he was coerced to sign the Treaty of Serirangapatam in 8th March, 1792.According to this pact Tipu Sultan had to cede the kingdom of Malabar to the British.

Under the supremacy of the British, Malabar was transformed into the district of Madras Presidency. The British also signed accords with the kings of Thirvithamkur and Kochi and now British became the Suzerain of India.
