The Chinnar wildlife reserve is one of the most celebrated wildlife parks in India. It is situated in Devikulam in the district of Idukki and is occupies vast tracts of ninety square kilometers. It got the acclaimed status of a wildlife sanctruary in 1984. Severe dry conditions prevail in these regions due to the scanty rainfall, limited to only forty eight days, during October and November.
The animal and plant kingdoms have adapted themselves to the harsh conditions. It is a variegated composition, boasting of rare species like the Neelakurinji and the famous grizzled squirrel. Tigers, elephants can also be spotted on a tour of the Chinnar. The avid bird watcher can feast their eyes on the elegant peacocks and the industrious wood pecker Plants like Chandanam, Velvelam, Bhadraksham and Mazhukanjiram abound in the verdant Chinnar reserves.
The stony surroundings of the sanctuary encourages trekking. So the adventure enthusiasts can try their hands at ascending the rocky terrain. Soak in the serene beauty of the lovely backwaters of Devikulam.
You can travel to the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary by rail or road or air. To travel by air your destination should be Cochin or Coimbatore. If, however, you would love to travel by the railways, you can alight at either Aluva or Pollachi.
