Coffee Plantations in Kerala


Serene backwaters, luxuriant reserves with an assortment of exotic wildlife and fauna, royal rendezvous with houseboats, variety of scenic delights- Kerala seems to be the latest buzz in the world of travelogues and getaway magazines. Besides these ubiquitous tourist destinations, sprawling coffee plantations in Kerala are also much coveted travel haunts.

Coffee orchards occupy a total area of 682.400 hectares. Gavi, Munnar and Nenmara are famous for their coffee estates. Apart from these popular coffee estates, the township of Vandiperiyar is also famed for its verdant coffee plantations. The coffee orchards of Gavi occupies 67.800 hectares, while tourists can visit sprawling 60.200 hectares of coffee plantations of Munnar. Coffee estates in Nenmara are spread over 77.400 hectares.

The Kerala Forest Development Corporation Limited is credited with the management of coffee estates in Kerala since 1976. Coffee gardens have sprung up in several areas which are not suitable for the cultivation of cardamom.

The upkeep of vast tracts of coffee estates Pamba, Cheeyambam and Kallumala of the district of Wayanad are also the responsibility of the Corporation.

Backpackers to Kerala coffee plantations will come across the Robusta coffee orchards. These coffee gardens are huge employment generators. They are not hired on temporary terms and conditions. Their contribution to the economy of Kerala is immense.

The coffee seeds are deplumed and dried up when they reach the stage of maturity. Do not forget to stack your bags with sealed aromatic packets of coffee for they are one of the most cherished souvenirs of Kerala.
