Kathakali Masks


A Kathakali mask is a large wooden mask of a human face painted exactly like the face of a Kathakali dancer's is for his performance. The vivid colors, the long darkened eyes and the big prominent ornaments- these Kathakali masks are a favorite souvenir for most of the tourists to the state.

The varies shopping arcades and curio shops in busy tourist centers such as Trivandrum, Kumarakom, Periyar too sell these mementoes, but the Kathakali masks are especially famous in Thripunithura, Ernakulam, Calicut and Palakkad since the art itself is well practiced in these parts.

Kathakali, is probably the most famous dance form of Kerala and the entire state's essence is reflected in it. Colorful, vibrant, cultural and historic- the art is cherished by the connoisseurs and owning a Kathakali mask is symbolic of treasuring these values that the state cherishes.
