Kerala Mosques

The backwaters of God’s Own Country houses numerous historical monuments, majestic and towering specimens of the rich cultural heritage of verdant Kerala. It abounds in temples, churches, mosques and synagogue- an example of the strong multi-ethnic mould that cocoons the lush country of Kerala.

The mosques of Keralaare the repositories of the Kerala-Arabia legacy. The mosques of Keraladotting Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur, Kochiand Thiruvananthapuram carry the insignia of Arab aesthetics. These tourist hubs are strategically located and are easily accessible by air, Railways or Road. Engaging tales do the rounds regarding the history of these mosques. The eager tourist can explore the vicinity of these mosques and they are sure to come across a few other landmarks, resplendent in their ancient aura.
  • The Cheraman Juma Masjid of Thrissur
    This Mosque dates back to 629 A.D. Situated in the Methala Village of Kodungalloor, it is perhaps the first Muslim shrine to be erected in the Indian subcontinent. Incidentally, it was also the second mosque to conduct prayers on the auspicious Juma. The Chera ruler, Cheraman Perumal gives the mosque its name. Malik Bin Dar is credited with the construction of this famed mosque. Vidyarambaham ceremony, a Vijaya Dashami fixture, is celebrated with great gusto.

  • Pazhayangadi Mosque of Malappuram
    The Pazhayangadi Mosque of Malappuram is also known as the Kondotty Mosque. The history of the mosque is entwined with Muhammad Shah. Tourists flock to its sacred precincts to witness Valiya Nercha.

  • Madayi Mosque of Kannur
    The Madayi Mosque, situated in Kannur, was built by Malik Ibn Dina in 1124 A.D. After paying your respects at the mosque, you can visit the ancient fortress, located in the neighborhood of the mosque. It is believed to have been erected by Tipu Sultan.

  • Kanjiramattom Mosque of Kochi
    The Kanjiramattom Mosque is located at a distance of thirty kilometers from Kochi. Festivals like Kodikuthu, Oppana and Kolkali claims a larger share of the tourist pie every year.

  • Jama-at- Mosque of Malappuram
    The Jama-at-Mosque of Malappuram has a rather unique history of being constructed by a Hindu family called the Prana Nambi. The mosque is over two hundred and eighty of age.

  • Beemapalli of Thiruvanathapuram
    This shrine is dedicated to the devout Beema Beevi. The Uroos Festival and the Chandanakudam Mahotsavam are celebrated with great pomp and vigor.
