Location of Sree Chitra Art Gallery
This museum is situated north of the Napier Museum in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. In fact this art gallery shares the same ground with the Napier Museum.
Foundation
This Art Gallery was set up in 1935 and stands as a repository of antiques and curios of the past since then.
Significance
This renowned art gallery houses the paintings and works of the feted oil-painting artist Raja Ravi Varma who was lived at Kilimanoor Palace in Kerala.
Displays of Sree Chitra Art Gallery
Famous paintings and works of art of Raja Ravi Varma, Nicholas Roerich and Svetlova are displayed in the gallery. Recherché paintings of Mughal, Rajputs artists and other schools of art are also great sources of attraction for art lovers. Paintings of Raja Ravi Varma include portraits of monarchs and the members of the royal families, British residents and renowned individuals. These paintings are so life-like that it seems that history has come alive. Tanjore paintings are also there. Not only this, there are also Bengali school paintings. Besides native collections, the gallery also exhibits paintings from Japan, Tibet, China, and Bali.
There are other popular manuscripts of architectural importance and Mural paintings of Kerala and Copies of the Ajanta Caves Paintings.
Timings- The museum remains open everyday from10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Monday mornings and Wednesday.
