Kerala Textiles


For women over the world, shopping for clothes and textiles is an almost therapeutic experience. And for the Indian women, in particular, the rustle of silk is sheer melody. All over Kerala shops and arcades display vibrant silk sarees.

These come in an array of bright colors and a variety of shades. White silk, "Venpattu", is a favorite of Malayali women especially the Christian ladies. Silk brocade saris such as Kancheepuram silks from the neighboring Tamil Nadu find a huge market in Kerala.

Besides the traditional off-white saree with a golden border or a neruyathu-mundu set is a must buy for every tourist to the state. You may wish to but the traditional ‘Veshti’ for your spouse, but the various malls and shopping plazas that have sprung up cater to the tastes of the younger generation. Jeans, T-shirts, Shirts, western wear and salwar suits galore; these arcades are a shopper’s paradise. Thrissur is also famous for its hosiery mills.

Trivandrum comes alive with its textile shops in the months preceding Vishu and Onam. Fine cotton and lace work is also a major attraction of Kerala. Tourists from the Gulf countries are fascinated with the premium lace products and embroidered textiles of Kerala Caps made in Alappuzha are of export quality.
