Vythiri, environed by the lofty Western Ghats, is a hilly region of bewildering beauty situated in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Sited far from the dirt and grime of the city, Vythiri rejuvenates your soul and senses.

Location- This charming rocky land is elevated 1300m above the sea level, just above the Thamarassery Ghat and lies in the northern Wayanad district, about 100 km from Kozhikode.

Best time to visit- The monsoons of Kerala enhances the beauty of the Western Ghats. So visit Vythiri during the rainy season i.e May to September.

Flora and Fauna- As Vythiri houses the Evergreen Rain Forests, it is rich in wildlife characteristic of evergreen forests. There is dense undergrowth, thick foliage, mosses and lichens cover the trunks of trees and there are a large number of pine, conifer and fir trees. Wild animals like Nilgiri langur, thrush and Malabar squirrel frequent the branches of the trees. The small streams and waterbodies sustain a wide assortment of wildlife including colorful insects and birds.

Things to See and do

Tree Houses- One of the charming tourist attractions is the tree- house. Small lodgings made of wood are perched at the top of the trees of tropical rain forests above 90 ft from the ground. You can spend some unforgettable and adventurous time by viewing the fabulous sight of the scarlet setting sun, the bird’s eye view of the entire wild habitat, the peculiar activities of the frolicking animals and birds and the awe- inspiring views of the mist- garbed mountain peaks. Staying at the towering tree- houses will increase your bond with nature- You are amidst untamed nature, yet you are safe!

From the tree houses you can also walk through rope bridges that hang over the meandering streams.

Edakkal Caves – These caves form a part of the Ambukuthi Hills, located about 10 kms from Sultan Bathery, in Wayanad district of Kerala. A huge crack in the rock resulted in the formation of these caves with picturesque beauty.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary- This wildlife sanctuary, set up in1973 is a well- preserved and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve of Kerala. This sanctuary is a home to varied wildlife and trees like deciduous teak, bamboo and so on.

Chembra peak: The Chembra is the loftiest peak in Wayanad with an altitude of 2100 m above sea level. This place is a favorite with the trekking-buffs.

The Pookot Lake: This fresh water lake lies amidst the forests and is located about 30 km from Vythiri. You can enjoy boating and visit the children’s park, spice emporium and a fresh water aquarium.

Likkidi hills: These hills stand 700 m above mean sea level and are located near Vythiri. You can also enjoy trekking and nature trails over here.

Nearest Airport – Calicut International Airport is located 85 kms away.
The nearest town is Kozhikode. Buses are also available.
