Second Bajirao Peshwa was the most unpopular amongst his subjects due to his pleasure loving and avaricious attitude. Being the last amongst the Peshwa dynasty, he could not the legend of a great Peshwa Rule on his shoulders. After Madhavrao committed suicide in 1796, Second Bajirao Pehswa stepped in to rule the Maratha kingdom. He was extravagant in his dealings and emptied the treasures of his ancestors in a wink of an eye the death of Nana Phadnavis in the year 1800, cased a great strife in the Maratha kingdom as Holkar and Sindhia got engaged in a power struggle. Pune was the seat of the Second Bajirao Peshwa and after this struggle reached Pune he was forced to flee. The power of the Peshwa rule weakened when Bajirao signed a treaty with the British in the year 1802. After the capture of the Ahmadnagar Fort the power ended totally. The son of Second Bajirao Peshwa, Nanasaheb Peshwa tried to stall the British forces but his efforts went in vain.

He was the first Maratha to have fled from the British attacks instead of fighting with them. Bajirao surrendered to Sir John Malcom. The extent of Bajirao’s inhabitance became limited to a small village under the watchful eyes of the British. The life of the last Peshwa, Second Bajirao Peshwa was thus wasted away and finally he died in the year 1851.
