Government Departments

Maharashtra government is dedicated towards serving the citizens and for that purpose it has delegated the responsibility to the various departments of the government. Each department takes care of the different needs of the inhabitants. Apart from the government departments, the government of Maharashtra is assisted by the Boards and Corporations in the fulfillment of its duty.

The Government Departments and their functions are:

  • Agriculture Department, Maharashtra: the agriculture department takes care of the development of the agriculture and farm products, quality control of the farm production, compensation for the crop losses, granting crop loans to the farmers, increasing the agricultural production and taking care of the farmer’s needs.

  • Co-operation Department, Maharashtra: the co – operation department of Maharashtra government includes services for cotton and sugarcane farm development. The cotton grower’s co – operative in Maharashtra is one of the world’s largest cooperatives. The other department helps in tracking down the family origins of a person belonging to the Maharashtra.

  • Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra: this department takes care of the medical education and the examinations related to the medical education. It maintains records regarding examinations and also informs the examinees about the dates.

  • Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra: the role of the Directorate is to maintain high level of technical education keeping pace with the requirements of the labor market and with national and international needs.

  • Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET), Maharashtra: this department provides vocational training to the students. This department was started after the department of technical education to take care of the needs of specialization and professional training. Apart from holding workshops regarding the particular job, the department also provides jobs which suit the particular branch of education.

  • Employment and Self Employment Department, Maharashtra: solves the problem of unemployment by encouraging the youths to take part in self – employment schemes.

  • Finance Department, Maharashtra: as the name suggests the finance department takes care of the treasury of the state. the directorate of accounts and treasuries takes the responsibility of handling all the accounts and finance related work.

  • Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department: the most important function of this department is to ensure that the public distribution system in the state is implemented properly. There are also other functions like the minimum support price scheme, the mid day meal system and creation and maintenance of storage facilities. The implementation of Consumer Protection Act is also very important.

  • Forest Department, Maharashtra: the function of the forest department is to preserve and protect the forest reserves of the state. it also includes protecting the wildlife.

  • Home Department. Maharashtra: the Home department of the state of Maharashtra takes care of the law and order conditions of the state. This department includes the state police, anti corruption bureau and civil defense department.

  • Irrigation Department, Maharashtra: the irrigation department takes care of the water storage services and irrigation facilities available in the villages which are essential for the farmers.

  • Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra: the function of this department is to construct and maintain certain structures like bridges, roads, flyovers which are necessary for the development of the state. Some examples are the bridge on the river Bhima, the Aryavit Bridge near Sangli, a bridge on the Sini River, a bridge on the Vedganga River.
