Maharashtra is a colorful state with a rich cultural heritage and a history to boast of. The State is well connected by air, road and rail links. There are airports at Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Nashik and Solapur. Foreign tourists can use the sea and air routes to get in the state. Maharashtra has a total land area of 308, 000 square km. Situated on the Deccan plateau of India, the state has steep cliffs on the west and number of rivers cutting into the plateau. The geographical features of Maharashtra are very diverse with rivers, plateaus and forests.

Maharashtra has 35 districts which are classified into six divisions which constitute the revenue earning divisions of Maharashtra. The important cities of Maharashtra are Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Solapur, Nagpur, Auranghabad and Thane. Mumbai is the capital city which plays the double role of being both the financial and the cinematic hub of the country. Maharashtra is mainly an agricultural state which also has major industries like metal, wine, jewellery, engineering and steel and iron industry

The total population of the state is 96, 752, 247 inhabitants which makes the state the second most populated state in the country. The state language is Marathi with other languages like the Hindi, Gujarati and English getting almost equal prominence. The government is headed by the chief minister, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh. The Vidhan Sabha or the State Legislative Assembly is in the capital city of the state, that is, Mumbai.
