According to the census 2001, the population of Maharashtra was 96, 752,247 in the 12th hour of March. The population of the sate is the second in the country after Uttar Pradesh and ranks 12th in the worldwide rankings of most populated states of the world. The most recent research has shown that there has been a lowered infant mortality rate from 42 per thousand to 36 per thousand. The scheduled caste and the scheduled tribe population have been given a 300% and 100% enhancement in the budget draft in this year. In the census 2001, it was seen that there was an improvement in the literacy rate from 64.87% to 77.27%.

Maximum number of the population in Maharashtra is Marathi speaking, which amounts to a whopping 62, 481,681 according to the census. Marathi is the state language, and the most commonly used language also. The other languages used by the people are Hindi, Gujarati and English. Ahirani language is spoken by a minor population.

Maharashtra is a state with Hindu majority who form 80.2% of the population. Muslims, Buddhists, Jains and Christians are the other religion who constitute 10.6%, 6% and 1% respectively.
