The Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal is a well known research centre for the study of Indian history and culture. It’s a grey stone building and was established in 1910. Located near Sadashiv Peth, the Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal comprises of a library, museum, picture gallery, study, and a well equipped laboratory for preservation of documents, rare books, manuscripts, coins, paintings, sculpture, weapons and other antiques. There is a vast collection of books on religion, philosophy, ritual, grammar, astrology, astronomy and medicine. Besides there are some 18th century maps and charts and most of the manuscripts found are written either in Sanskrit or in Marathi.
The picture gallery contains miniature painting of all school of arts belonging to 15th and 16th century. The most extraordinary paintings are the medieval Gauri-Pata and the Varanasi Ghat’s Paintings. Some finest collection of glass paintings of 18th and 19th centuries is also displayed.
The Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal remains open from 8:30 am to 10:30 am and 4 pm to 8 pm all days except Thursdays and government holidays. Public viewing is allowed only after prior appointments.
