The Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture is situated in St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. It’s a small museum containing antiques which are of people’s interest. The Heras Institute Indian History and Culture is named after Henry Heras who was profoundly interested in studying and documenting Indian history. An Indologist, Henry Heras was born in Barcelona, Spain. He came to India in 1922 and started the Indian historical institute. This institute was later renamed as the Heras Institute Indian History and Culture. He was a member of Indian Historical Records Commission, Indian History Congress and the International Congress of Historical Science and also founded Bombay Historical Society.
The Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture was established in 1926. The museum displays Mesopotamian antiques, terracotta items, Hindu and Buddhist icons, Indian and Christian woodwork and ivory work, coins, prehistoric potteries, Gandhara, Mathura and Gupta scriptures. There are also images of Virgin Mary and Jesus.
The museum remains open from 2 pm to 4 pm on Thursdays. One can visit the museum with prior appointment on any other weekdays.
