Murud-Janjira Fort

Located 60 km away from Alibaug, Murud-Janjira is a small village atop hill. Constructed in the 15th century, the Murud-Janjira stands erect despite of wind and sea waves on all four walls of the fort. This fort was never conquered by the rival forces for over 350 years. Neither the British nor Portuguese or the Marathas could triumph over the fort from Malik Amber, a ruler of Ahmednagar.

The Murud is popular for its picturesque beauty. Fanned by casuarinas, coconut and betel palms, Murud beach is a perfect escape from the hustle bustle of the city lives. The ancient fort of Murud-Janjira lie atop hill with a temple of Lord Dattatreya, and the three heads of it represent the Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara.

Palace of Nawab and Janjira caves are worth visiting. Nandgaon and Kashid beaches can also be visited a few km from here. A fair is held in Nandgaon every year in February in front of the famous Ganpati temple.
