Panchgani derives its name from the five hills surrounding it. As one ascends higher towards Panchgani, the road becomes narrower and steeper, the trees become greener and denser, and one can also hear the sounds of many unknown birds and insects. This calm and serene hill station was founded by John Chason in 1854 as an escape from the hustle bustle of the city. There are chances of one losing track of time in this quiet retreat of very charming mountains.
Panchgani is situated at a height of 1334 m above the sea level with a cool and dry climate. It still reflects the old British charm. Today Panchgani is more famous for the British and Parsi architecture. The breathtaking view of the Krishna River on one side and the coastal plain on the other is very arresting.
