Rajabai Clock Tower

The construction of the brilliant Rajabai Clock Tower was completed in 1878. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the Rajabai Clock Tower resembles the architecture of the famous clock tower of London, The Big Ben. The entire cost of Rs. 2 lakh, which was required to build the Rajabai Clock Tower, was funded by Premchand Roychand, who also founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. The Rajabai Clock Tower is named after his mother.

The Rajabai Clock Tower’s architecture is a blend of Venetian and Gothic styles. The 260 ft high tower has the best stained glass windows of the city. The ground floor of the Rajabai Clock Tower has two large rooms. The tower is decorated by oriental figures. During the British reign the clock used to play 16 tunes that changed four times a day. Some of these tunes were Rule Britannia, God Save the King and a Handel Symphony. These days it’s only limited to one single tune which is played in every 15 minutes.
