Wildlife Park and Sanctuaries in Maharashtra

The innumerous diversity of fauna has given birth to a large number of Wildlife Parks and Sanctuaries in Maharashtra. The Wildlife Parks and Sanctuaries in Maharashtra are a dwelling of a variety of animal species like tiger, crocodile, bison, Neelgai, Wild Deer, Sambar, and a lot of rare migratory birds. Maharashtra government has taken very good steps to preserve these regions as national Parks and Sanctuaries giving a splendid opportunity to observe these wild lives in natural settings.

The Mahim National Park is set by Shanta Chatterjee, a corporate lawyer and the chairperson of WWF. The park covers a huge area of 450 acres and is a home of a number of animals, birds and marine species. Situated near Mumbai, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a perfect destination for the bird watchers. Rare species of birds like Sunbirds, Drogues, Orioles and Babblers, colorful local birds could also be seen here.

With 113 species of birds, several species of animals like tiger, sloth bear, hyena, wild dog, gaur, sambar, nilgai, four horned antilope and wild boar, the rich vegetation of Melghat Tiger Reserve is a very popular tourist’s attraction.

A very popular picnic spot, Borivili Wildlife Park, is situated among the natural beauty of fresh streams and lush green valley. The park is sprawled over an area of 104 sq km.

The best time to visit Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is during the monsoon, when the Jyotivanti trees of this forest glow in the dark. This Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to a wide range of animals like leopards, sambar, barking deer, langurs and rhesus macaques.

Navegaon National Park is best known for Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, which is a home to nearly 60% of the species of birds found in Maharashtra. The lake amidst lush green hills makes Navegaon National Park a picturesque place.

Getting there:
Private cars, taxis, buses are all available. Package tours to these Forts are also available. Frequent train services are available from Aurangabad and Mumbai and also other cities of Maharashtra. Airports are also there in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Aurangabad.
