     BOMB BLAST IN MEHRAULI

Delhi, another terror attack ripped apart the peace of the capital. A crude bomb exploded in a crowded flower market of Mehrauli on Saturday at around 2:15 pm, claiming two lives and injuring more than twenty people.

Laying bare the big breach in the security that has claimed to be heightened up since the blasts of 13th September, two men on motorcycle dropped a tiffin box containing the bomb in a broad daylight and fled away from the spot. The police, which was reprieved after the arrest of Indian Mujahideen masterminds, is again on its toes.

The boy who saw the packed being dropped down, tried to give it to the bikers but they sped away and the bomb exploded then and there, resulting in a casualty on the spot. Another person succumbed to his injuries while in hospital.

Preliminary investigations suggest it to be the act of Mohammad Ansar's gang which was behind a number of low intensity blasts in the city, the most recent being at Lado Sarai this February. The police is also not ruling out the links with other terrorist outfits. Two persons have been detained for questioning but police is yet to make any break through yet.

Monday, May 23, 2005 (New Delhi):

One unidentified person died and over 70 people were injured after blasts rocked two cinema halls in central Delhi on Sunday night at the screening of the Sunny Deol starrer ''Jo Bole So Nihal.'' A red alert was sounded in the Capital and its adjoining areas.

According to the police, the first blast took place at about 8.25 p.m. in the sixth row at Liberty Cinema on New Rohtak Road. "It was a chemical plastic bomb which has been never used in the Capital before," said Joint Commissioner of Police Deep Chand. Such a bomb is a sophisticated improvised explosive device (IED) normally used by top-level militant organisations. The police said both Punjab and Kashmir terrorists had used the device.

The explosion's impact left a six-inch-wide crater inside the cinema hall. "Most people sustained injuries because of the splinters flying off chairs," said a police officer. Debris from the cinema's ceiling, which collapsed, also caused some injuries.

"We thought that it was part of the scene and then we saw the roof come down on us and then we ran," said a witness.

As police was rushing towards Liberty Cinema, there was news of another blast at Satyam Cinema at about 8.50 p.m. The police said the blast took place inside a toilet of a fast-food chain within the cinema hall complex. "I was serving food when I heard a huge sound. A woman and her child were inside the toilet. Both of them sustained major injuries," said an employee of the fast-food chain.

The injured were taken to the following hospitals:
  • Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital
  • Sir Ganga Ram Hospital
  • Lady Hardinge Hospital
  • Hindu Rao Hospital
  • Shree Jeevan Hospital
The cinema owner has put a notice board outside the cinema hall, giving the names of the injured and in which hospital they were being treated.

In a swift reaction, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee condemned the blasts calling them an attempt to disparage the Sikh image.

Delhi police have sounded a 'red alert,' sealing the capital's borders and deploying additional police forces at ''sensitive'' places, while cinema owners have decided to suspend screening of the film.

Meanwhile, a report from Mumbai said in view of the blasts here, security has been beefed up in the city's cinema halls screening the film while some cinema owners have decided to suspend its screening from today.

"Jo Bole So Nihal" became controversial because of its title, a Sikh battle cry.

The film, "Jo Bole So Nihal", was withdrawn from theatres across the largely Sikh state of Punjab last week, following protests by SGPC members.

The Shrimoni Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the highest decision-making body of the Sikh religion said the title misused the battle-cry.

The film title, "Jo Bole So Nihal" literally means:
'Jo'      ---   Whosoever
'Bole'   ---   Says
'So'      ---   Then (that person will be)
'Nihal'   ---   Invigorated
and the Sikhs follow this by saying 'SAT SIRI AKAL' which is "Truth Sword God" generally meaning 'use truth as the sword to attain God'.

The movie is a action comedy film-story about a very tough and simple police constable who is conned by a hardened terrorist which results in his being suspended and his parents ridiculed in the village. He prays to 'WAHEGURU' (GOD) to help him catch the terrorist and redeem himself and restore the honour of his parents. Now comes the comedy part - that notorious terrorist is in New York and the FBI requests him to identify him. So, he lands up in the Big Apple, meets an Indian origin FBI officer, she is his liaison with FBI.

Here you get a few jokes on the Punjabi language, like:
He says to her, "Hor, Ki Haal Hae Tera" meaning 'And, How are you?' --- the Punjabi word 'Hor' is pronounced similar to the English word 'Whore'.
The film follow the routine Hindi-movie (Bollywood) script of action with the good winning over the bad, i.e. he gets his man and brings him back to his village, thereby redeeming his family honour and his job.

The film was released all over India last week on Friday the 13th of May 2005.

The top brass of the police and other security agencies briefed the Union Home Minister on the security situation. The Delhi Police Comissioner, K K Paul said, "No terrorist group has claimed responsibility."

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit went to the site of the blasts and sent out a message that while people should be careful, there was no reason to panic.

"This is unfortunate but we have to investigate and then we can comment. But this is indeed a shocking incident," Sheila Dikshit said.

Late in the night, the Prime Minister had a word of assurance for the people of Delhi. He said the security situation is being monitored closely and the government will take all steps to ensure safety. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit the injured later in the day.
