SANIA MIRZA WINS HER US OPEN 2nd Round Match

Sania Mirza (current singles ranking 42) is through to the third round of the US Open with a hard fought three-set match against Maria Elena Camerin (current singles ranking 81)  6-4  1-6  6-4.

Sania Mirza, the 18-year-old Indian, built up a 4-1 lead in the first set and then lost momentum. The 20-year-old Italian Maria Elena Camerin staged a dramatic recovery from there. But Sania took the set 6-4 by breaking back in the 10th game.

The second set saw Camerin counter-punch with greater efficiency. The Italian broke Sania in the first and fifth game to take the second set 6-1 in 31 minutes.

In the third set, three unforced errors by Camerin handed the advantage to Sania by going down 2-3.
The drama was not over yet as Camerin levelled the score at 4-4. But Sania responded by unleashing a series of winners - a back hand down the line, an overhead smash and a return winner - to wrest the lead back.
Sania finally clinched the issue when a forehand pass set up a match point and Camerin hit a backhand wide.

Sania Mirza now faces the Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, who is currently ranked 43(one place below her). Marion Bartoli was the US Open Girl's Junior Champion in 2001 and is playing in her fourth US Open.

If Sania Mirza wins her third round US Open match, then she will face the winner of the match between No 1 seed Maria Sharapova of Russia and Julia Schruff (current singles ranking 87) of Germany in the fourth round of the US Open.
