2006 India News

       
There was quite a lot of buzz in the year 2006 in India. Some significant changes took place in the country-some were good and some extremely unexpected and mournful. We bring you three events which were quite talked of in the year 2006.

Terrorist Attacks: India was given a very tough time by the terrorists who tried to disturb the peace of the country not once but twice.

The first terrorist attack was on the Holy city of Varanasi on 7 March 2006. There were two successive blasts in the city. One at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple where large number of people had gathered to offer their evening prayers followed by another one at the Railway Station.

The second and the more severe blast took place in the finance capital of India-Mumbai. There were 7 bomb blasts in the local trains of Mumbai over the period of only 11 minutes. As many as 209 people lost their lives and 700 were badly injured.

Death of Pramod Mahajan: Pramod Mahajan (One of the prominent leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party) was shot dead by his own younger brother Pravin Mahajan over a family dispute. Pravin shot Pramod Mahajan on 22 April and he lost his life on 3 may 2006 after being treated for 13 days in the famous Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai The brutal murder of a brother by a brother shocked everyone and the incident was reported by several tabloids and magazines even after many days of his death.

Visit of George Bush: The former president of the United States- George Bush visited India and stayed in the country for three days from 2nd to 5th March. The purpose of the visit was to sign the nuclear deal between two countries. George Bush became the fifth American President to pay a visit to India after Dwight Eisenhower (1959), Richard Nixon (1969), Jimmy Carter (1978) and William J Clinton (2000).

As an initiative to improve the trade between the two countries India and China collectively decided to reopen the Nathula Pass on July 6th 2006. The pass was closed during the Sino-Indian war of 1962.

A strike was held by the medical doctors against the reservation in the medical institutions for OBC's (Other Backword Classes) in the month of May.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee who was a critically acclaimed Indian Film director died on 27th August 2006.
