7 blasts rock Bangalore on 25th July 2008
July 25, 2008 (1600 hrs IST): Leaving clear indications of a terror strike, five bombs exploded in 12 minutes in Bangalore leaving 4 dead and several injured. Initial reports say that the blasts were clearly premeditated, aimed at disturbing peaceful civil life at crowded areas like Nayandahallil, Madiwala, Anepalya and Koramangalam in India's Silicon Valley. The first blast took place at 1.30 in the afternoon, and immediately afterwards communication channels were gripped with panic calls. Many offices have been closed for the day, even as bomb squads rushed to the blast sites.
This is the first emergency faced by the newly installed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of Karnataka. With this incident, the government led by BJP - a party of Hindu rightists - is expected to wield its iron fist over Islam militancy in the state. The incident may also add to the anti-minority jingoism of BJP.
Bangalore, an established IT hub of India and the capital of Karnataka state, enjoys a metropolitan character as it attracts yuppies from all over India as well as from foreign countries to work in the IT multinational companies here.
