As per the Met office in Chennai, the satellite cloud imageries indicate that the cyclonic storm "Mahasen" is around 850 km southeast of Chennai in the Bay of Bengal. The met officials said that it would initially move northwest-wards and recurve thereafter northeast-wards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.

The forecast predicts rain or thundershowers at a few places in Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, south interior Karnataka and Puducherry. Cut off rains or thundershowers may occur over Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep. Chennai would be partly cloudy with rain or thundershowers in some areas.

Isolated heavy rainfall would occur over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during next 48 hours. Fishermen of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are advised not to venture into sea during the next 48 hours as per the Met office.

The latest satellite imagery shows disorganization of the cloud mass and weakening of the cyclone system as per the India Meteorological Department in its bulletin. Stormy winds of speed reaching 40 to 60 kmph would prevail along the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and sea condition will be rough.

In Chennai, heavy rains with thunder and lightning hit several parts of the city bringing respite from scorching heat. A Chandigarh-bound Jet Airways flight was cancelled owing to bad weather.
