A moderate intensity earthquake rocked the entire north-eastern region of India on Wednesday 9th January 2013 at around 7.12 am in the morning.
Officials at the regional seismological centre in Shillong said that the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale with its epicenter being 89 km underneath the earth's crust along the Indo-Myanmar border. The earthquake lasted a few seconds and rocked major towns in the region. So far there are no reports of any injury to people or damage to property.

H Lallenmawia, Joint-Director, Department of Geology and Mineral Resources, Mizoram said the epicenter was in Phek district of Nagaland. He said that the technical information about the earthquake was received from the seismological centre of the North-East Institute of Science and Technology in Jorhat, Assam. The tremor was felt in Itanagar, Agartala, Guwahati, Kohima and Imphal. There were no injury to people or damage to property anywhere in the region, but panic stricken people ran out of their homes for safety.
