Recent reports say that the earthquake struck at the depth 82 km (51 miles) beneath the surface, near the Iran-Pakistan border. The USGS say that the epicenter is located 201 km southeast of the Iranian city of Zahedan. Communications in the lightly populated desert and mountain region was mostly cut off, making it difficult to assess the casualties.
It was the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in 40 years. This area is prone to tectonic activity. Tremors were felt across the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Gulf cities and parts of Asia too. Tall buildings shook and people were seen running to the streets for safety.
Iran's Press Television reports, say that at least 40 people have been confirmed dead due to the earthquake. Damage to property is also reported in the area. In Baluchistan province, south-west Pakistan, 34 people are reported to be dead.
The Iranian city of Khash is likely to be the worst affected according to the European Mediterranean seismological centre reports. Power and communication systems are reported to be down in most of Sistan and Baluchistan province after the earthquake.
This earthquake was the second big quake to strike Iran in a week. On 9th April 2013, an earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck close to Bushehr nuclear power station. Two villages devastated killing 37 people and injuring 850.
