On 4th April 2013, around 6:30 pm in the evening, an illegal under-construction building collapsed in Thane, Maharashtra. Around 36 people died in the incident and over 59 have been reported to be injured. As per the Thane Deputy Collector, among the dead were 9 children and 5 women. Over 30 people have sustained serious injuries. Children are feared to be buried under the debris as tuition classes were held in the building.

Medical teams, fire tenders and rescue workers were rushed to the spot immediately. Several people are feared to be still trapped under the debris and the rescue operations are still going on. The rescue operation is going on and the first priority is to rescue as many people as possible, said KP Raghuvanshi, Thane Police Commissioner. He further said that the building was newly built and full efforts are in effect to nab the builders. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the builder.

The civic officials said that the building was unauthorized and illegally built on forest land and two notices were already sent to the building. The building was said to be occupied till the fourth floor. The families had moved in even while the construction was going on. They were living without an occupancy certificate as the builder feared the building would be demolished.

The injured people were admitted to various hospitals including the Thane Civil, Kalsekar hospital in Kalwa, CSM Civic hospital at Kalwa, while those who were in critical condition were shifted to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital and JJ Hospital in Mumbai.
