Alwar is a captivating town in the state of Rajasthan. Steeped in local history, the natural and architectural marvels of this city are alluring to the tourists of the state. Alwar city as it stands now is believed to have been founded in the 11th century by King Alguhraj. The city has always been the seat of power struggle and has witnessed important wars between the Rajputs and the Muslim invaders. The victories of Sultan Balban and Maharana Pratap Singh have been recorded in the annals of the city's golden history. The city is located at a distance of 148 kms from Jaipur the state's capital city which is also the nearest airport. Excellent rail and road links connect Alwar to the rest of the state.

A number of fairs and festivals are celebrated with great cheer and zeal in the town. Sawan Teej (August), Chuhar Sidh, Laldas Maila (May), Bilali Fair (March- April), Sahibji ka Maila, Jagannathji Fair (July) and Bhartrihari (August) are colorful and merry occasions and are marked by the traditional arts, music and dance.

The main spots of tourist attraction in the city of Alwar are:

  • Bala Quila or the Alwar Fort
  • City Palace
  • Government Museum
  • Moosi Maharani Chhatri
  • Purjan Vihar or Company Garden; and
  • Tomb of Fateh Jang

    Hope Circus, Bazaza Bazar, Sarafa Bazar, Malakhera Bazaar and Kedalgang Bazaar are the best places in Alwar to pick up the ethnic handicrafts and trinkets, must buys and souvenirs of the state.

    A number of heritage hotels, RTDC and other private hotels provide a variety of accommodation to suit every budget. A number of excellent restaurants such as Dawat, South Indian Café, Siddhartha and Café Alishan serve scrumptious food to the guests.
