Roadways- The aggregate length of the roads in Rajasthan is estimated about 140,000 km. In 1993, the length of the surfaced roads was state 65,000 km which increased to 89,000 by 1999. Rajasthan’s road density is 41.2 km per 100 square km against the national average of 76.8 square km. The altogether length of the national highways including the highways connecting Delhi and Mumbai that pass through the state is 4,597 km. The state has promoted private investment in the development of these highways by implementing projects on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. Currently Rajasthan has ten BOT projects encompassing 150 km with over US$ 25 million investment.
Road transport consists of government run Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation buses, private buses, tongas, tempo, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws and so on.
Railways- The total railway network in Rajasthan has a length of 5,894 km including electrified track of about 500 km. At the moment a huge proportion of the existing railway network is meter gauge based. One of the most important means that contributes significantly to the state’s revenue collection and economy is the super- luxurious train- Palace on Wheels. The train offers a week long packaged tour to Rajasthan and is very popular with the tourists.
Airways- Rajasthan has airports in its three important commercial, tourist and business centers – Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The Jaipur airport is the only international airport of Rajasthan. There is also an airport at Jaisalmer that remains open from October to March. The flights of Jet Airways and the Indian Airlines are regularly operated from New Delhi and Mumbai. Apart from these air strips and helipads are also available at certain places. According to a survey the number of passengers dealt at Jaipur and Udaipur airports were 419,169 in 2003-04 and 366,833 in 2001-02. In 2003, Jaipur Airport was granted the ISO 9001:2000 certification for its Quality Management systems.
